This makes service work on CO2 air conditioning systems considerably safer

WAECO presents upgrade of its CO2 A/C service unit

R 744 (also known as CO2) continues to be available as an alternative to the formerly used R 134a refrigerant, and temporarily also as an alternative to R 1234yf. Even though only very few vehicle manufacturers are using this eco-friendly substance, WAECO went on researching into the technology of its ASC 7400 G service unit for carbon dioxide air conditioners, which was presented for the first time at the Automechanika two years ago.

The focus now is on various safety aspects – most notably, the high pressures of up to 180 bars inside the vehicle A/C system which have to be considered in the development of such workshop products. In most cases the service hoses are the weak spots of the A/C service unit. In workshop practice, these hoses are exposed to loads that can hardly be simulated in the laboratory. Bending and pressure loads accelerate the ageing process more than one might think. This fact represents a real danger in the daily use of a carbon dioxide A/C service unit. Hoses may easily tear off under a system pressure of 90 to 180 bars, resulting in so called “hose whips” which may cause serious injuries to persons standing nearby.

To avoid this scenario, WAECO has developed a special hose package. The key component of this hose package is a “safety rope” which was specially designed to make service work on CO2 air conditioning systems considerably safer and minimize the risk of injuries.

Additionally, WAECO is the only supplier to offer a UV leak detection additive for carbon dioxide A/C systems. The new TP-3826-0050 was developed in association with a German vehicle manufacturer and a renowned compressor maker and has been approved by both of them. Based on a ND-15 compressor oil, the additive – when applied in a cumulative leak detection process – represents a safe and efficient leak detection method, even in case of vibration leaks.
